Author Guidelines

Manuscript format

All manuscripts (theoretical and empirical articles, as well as systematic review) are reviewed under a double-blind peer review process.

Authors are encouraged to prepare their manuscripts according to the following formatting requirements:

1.Manuscripts must be prepared using the corresponding Microsoft Word template:

Empirical articles: 5,000–7,000 words, theoretical articles: 5,000–7,000 words, systematic literature reviews: 6,000–7,000 words, book reviews: 1,000 words.

  • The text must be single-spaced.
  • Times New Roman font.
  • It must contain three to five keywords.
  • It must include the sections specified in the template.
  • All figures and tables must be placed in the appropriate locations within the text, rather than at the end.
  • Notes must be included at the end of the document and not at the bottom of the page.
  • Use the APA citation style, 7th edition in English (4th edition in Spanish).
  • The authors’ contributions must be acknowledged using the CREDIT taxonomy. 

2. Submit TWO copies of the manuscript: ONE with the authors’ information (full name, affiliation, email, and ORCID); the SECOND copy WITHOUT the authors’ information—please verify that this information does not appear in the file properties.

3. Follow the style (citation and formatting of tables and figures) of the American Psychological Association (APA) 7th edition in English or 4th edition in Spanish; a brief guide can be downloaded here.

4. Include a THIRD file containing the signed Letter of Originality and Transfer of Rights in the provided format. 

Citation style

The manuscript should conform to the American Psychological Association (APA) style in its seventh edition. A brief guide to APA style can be found here.

Statement of originality and letter of cession of rights

All contributions should be submitted together with a letter addressed to the Editorial Board of the journal, signed by all authors. The letter should include:

  1. The statement that the submitted manuscript constitutes original work that has not been published or is not being evaluated in another publication.
  2. A statement that permission has been obtained to publish the images and illustrations contained in the manuscript.
  3. Cessions of the rights to publish the manuscript in case it is accepted.

The letter signed by all authors (in PDF format) should be uploaded to OJS as an additional file. The model of the letter can be downloaded here: ETiE copyright form.

Evaluation Form (Articles)

Please answer "Yes" or "No" and support your answer with comments or suggestions.

  1. Is congruent the title with the content?
  2. Is the structure of the sections of the paper relevant?
  3. Does the theoretical background adequately and logically orient the reader?
  4. Has the relevant literature been adequately reviewed? (relevant, sufficient and updated information and bibliography).
  5. Are the quotes adequate and complete? (APA style)
  6. Does the work have scientific validity? (conceptual precision, argumentative rigor and sufficiently complete exposition of the topics covered in each part of the work and their interpretations, as well as the necessary coherence between them).
  7. Does the work show originality, transcendence and timeliness of the information?
  8.  Is there clarity and conciseness in the abstract of the article?
  9. Do keywords represent the article in a significant way?
  10. Is the methodology adequate? (in the case of articles): Are the data analysis techniques appropriate?
  11. Is the data analysis sufficiently clear?
  12. Does the conclusions have solid bases?
  13. Clear and fluent exposition of ideas.
  14. Adequate wording (clarity or intelligibility, coherence and syntax will be evaluated).
  15. Indicate the advantages and disadvantages of the article compared to similar texts or research already applied.
  16. In the case that recommendations are indicated, do you consider that the article should be returned to you to verify its full compliance?
  17. Additional comments for the editor.
  18. Additional comments for the author.
  19. Based on all the above considerations, the text is (check): Publishable / Publishable with modifications/Reassessment/Unpublishable.

Evaluation Form (Reviews)

This instrument evaluates the content and form of the texts submitted for the review section, with a positive or negative evaluation and a space to make recommendations to the authors if necessary.

  1. It contains information on the reviewed text: title of the book, publication or document, name of the author(s), edition, city of publication, publisher and number of pages. APA style should be used.
  2. The subject matter of the review is in accordance with the journal's interests.
  3. A publication dated within the last 5 years is reviewed.
  4. Proper spelling is used throughout the text.
  5. There is coherence between paragraphs
  6. The structure elements of the reviewed text are indicated: chapters, sections, etc.
  7. There is an adequate and diverse use of academic language.
  8. Uses terms appropriate to the discipline
  9. Identifies the importance of the text reviewed within the corresponding discipline.
  10. Summarizes the content of the text reviewed
  11. Includes explicit evaluative judgments on the relevance of the text, highlighting strengths and limitations.
  12. It has a maximum length of 1,000 words
  13. General Observations/Discussion/If you have any contribution for the authors please write in this space.

Evaluation Form (Systematic Literature Reviews)

1.The topic of the systematic review is consistent with the scope and interests of the journal.

2.The systematic review adheres to internationally recognized methodological recommendations.

3.The abstract includes the objective, inclusion and exclusion criteria, information sources, study selection procedures, principal findings, and conclusions.

4.The manuscript clearly describes the research question, review protocol, databases consulted, search strategy, inclusion and exclusion criteria, quality assessment procedures, data extraction process, and data synthesis methods.

5.Systematic literature reviews should have an approximate length of 6,000–7,000 words, including abstracts, tables, figures, and references.

6.Authors must submit, as supplementary material, the complete search strategy used for each database consulted.

7.If artificial intelligence (AI) tools were used to support the development of search protocols, such use must be explicitly reported and described.

8.Results should present the principal findings organized according to thematic categories, dimensions, or variables of analysis.

9.The discussion section should critically interpret the findings; compare results with previous research; identify limitations of the review; highlight theoretical, methodological, and practical implications.

10.Conclusions should explicitly address the research question and identify directions for future research.

11. If recommendations are given, do you think the review article should be returned to you to verify that they have been fully addressed?
12.    Additional comments for the editor.
13.    Additional comments for the author.
14.    Based on all of the above considerations, the text is: Publishable / Publishable with revisions / Reassessment / Not publishable.

 

Article retraction and erratum policies

Through the figure of article retraction, Emerging Trends in Education has the right to inform and/or alert the scientific community and readers in general about voluntary or involuntary errors committed in its publications, as well as evident fraud committed by the authors of the articles.

The retraction will be given for the following cases:

  1. Alteration of research results.
  2. Misrepresentation and manipulation of discussions and conclusions.
  3. Total or partial plagiarism
  4. Demonstrated fictitious authorship
  5. Non-acknowledgement of co-authorships
  6. Duplicate publications (the same article is already published in another medium)

Other demonstrable situations in which the ethics and good practices of the publications are affected. In all cases, the retraction will be made by means of an erratum that will be published in the following editions. All publications of Emerging Trends in Education are based on the principles of transparency and good practices in academic publications established by the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics).

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which appear in About the Journal.
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF or WordPerfect format. Submissions should not be in PDF format.
  • The submission has not been previously published or submitted for consideration by any other journal (or an explanation has been provided in the Comments to the Editor).
  • Text is single spaced; 12-point font size; typeface Times New Roman; italics are used instead of underlining (except in URLs); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed in appropriate places in the text, rather than at the end.
  • The manuscript complies with the required length specifications: empirical articles: 5,000-7,000 words, theoretical articles: 5,000-7,000 words, systematic literature reviews: 6,000-7,000 words, reviews: 1,000 words.
  • The manuscript contains all the sections specified in the guidelines for authors.
  • TWO files are sent: the first one is a document that includes only the authors' information (names, affiliations, emai addresses, ORCID); the second file is the manuscript without references to authors.
  • If submitted to a peer-reviewed section of the journal (theoretical and empirical articles), authors should remove any personal references to ensure anonymous review.
  • The manuscript adheres strictly to the citation style of the American Psychological Association (APA), seventh edition.
  • A third file is included in the shipment with the Letter of Originality and Transfer of Rights in PDF signed in the format provided.
  • The article must include three to five keywords.
  • ALL metadata of the manuscript and authors (abstract, keywords, language, ORCID, institution of affiliation, authors' biographical summary) have been captured.

Articles

Contributions submitted to this section could be:

1.1 Empirical studies

They present the results of quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, or trans-disciplinary educational research related to the journal’s lines of inquiry. The contributions submitted to this section need:

  • A title in Spanish and English; 15 words maximum
  • An abstract in Spanish and English; 200 words each. It should come after the article’s title and should present the relevance of the issue under examination, and a brief description of the objectives, methodology, main results and theoretical/pedagogical implications.
  • A set of keywords: minimum 3 and maximum 5, in English and Spanish
  • An introduction. This section includes the theoretical and empirical background to the study and presents the aim of the research.
  • A methodology section
  • A data analysis and result section
  • A discussion and conclusion section
  • A reference list using APA style

The article’s length should be between 5,000 and 7,000 words. All contributions submitted to this section will undergo a blind peer-reviewed process.

1.2 Theoretical studies

They present a theoretically and empirically grounded position regarding an educational theory, phenomenon, trend or issue; they contribute to the conceptualization or reconceptualization of an issue, topic or methodology. The author’s position should build upon pertinent and current educational scientific literature. The contribution should include:

  • A title: in Spanish and English; 15 words maximum
  • An abstract in Spanish and English; maximum 200 words each. It should come after the title and should contain a brief description of the objectives, as well as the main contributions of the research work.
  • A set of keywords: minimum 3 and maximum 5; in English and Spanish.
  • An introduction presenting the issue under discussion and the author’s position
  • A theoretical and empirical discussion substantiating the author’s position
  • A conclusion
  • A list of references using APA style

The essay’s length should be between 5,000 and 7,000 words. All contributions submitted to this section will undergo a blind peer-reviewed process.

1.3. Systematic Literature Reviews

Systematic literature reviews are scholarly studies that synthesize and critically analyze the available scientific evidence on a specific topic within the field of education through a rigorous, transparent, and reproducible methodology. These contributions are expected to advance knowledge by identifying research trends, gaps, challenges, and future directions for investigation.

Systematic literature reviews submitted to Emerging Trends in Education must adhere to internationally recognized methodological standards and comply with the journal’s formatting and citation requirements.

Manuscripts should include, at a minimum, the following sections: 

·         Title: in Spanish and English; maximum 15 words.

·         Abstract: in Spanish and English, with a maximum of 200 words each. The abstract should be placed immediately after the title and provide a concise description of the objectives and principal contributions of the study.

·         Keywords: a minimum of three and a maximum of five keywords in both Spanish and English.

·         Introduction: including the research question and objectives.

·         Method: review protocol, search strategy, information sources and databases consulted, inclusion and exclusion criteria, study selection process, methodological quality assessment procedures (when applicable), and data extraction and synthesis methods.

·         Results: presenting the main findings organized according to thematic categories, dimensions, or variables of analysis.

·         Discussion and Conclusions: the discussion should critically interpret the findings, compare them with previous research, identify the limitations of the review, and highlight its theoretical, methodological, and practical implications. The conclusions should explicitly address the research question and identify potential directions for future research.

·         References: formatted according to APA Style.

 The recommended length for this type of manuscript is 6,000–7,000 words, including abstracts, tables, figures, and references. All submissions to this section will be subject to a double-blind peer-review process.

Reviews

The manuscripts submitted to this section present a critical review of an educational book, resource or legal document. We also accept reviews of educational software. Reviews should follow this structure:

  • Review’s title (it should not be the same of the analyzed text)
  • Information about the book, resource, document using APA style.
  • Abstract: summary of the reviewed element. It may include information about the author, his/her work and techniques.
  • Evaluation: evaluative judgment of the work reviewed, highlighting contributions and limitations.
  • Identification of the reviewer: name, institution, postal address, email and country.

The length of the reviews should be 1,000 words; the journal’s Editorial Board will review these contributions. The work reviewed should be five years old or less.
